We want our pupils to speak – as well as think – for themselves, so we give them a voice in school affairs.
Our school council was created in September 2002, after we set up class councils for Years 1 to 6 as part of our commitment to the government’s Healthy Schools initiative.
Each class has two representatives on the school council, with Year 5 members helping the youngest members. School council meets once every half-term to discuss agenda items put forward in class councils.
The children welcome the chance to vote on their own ideas, which range from providing trays and china plates at lunchtime for older children to planning and developing new playground equipment and discussing how to provide healthy snacks at break-times.
They all learn valuable lessons in citizenship, community and responsibility – and their speaking and listening skills develop considerably.
