From Jungles to Antarctica

3rd March 2010

From tales of pink penguin poo to hugging giant redwoods and admiring jade vines, the children have continued to enjoy a rich variety of Discovery Week events.

Wednesday was a day for trips: Year 2 and Year 6 headed for Bishop's Stortford College's fascinating Science Action Centre, while Years 4 and 5 went to Cambridge Botanic Garden.

Out and aboutThe children discovered how carnivorous plants feed, why alpine plants are so close to the ground, and what is so unusual about eucalyptus bark. They followed the story of bananas, looked at different varieties and learned a wonderful song!

"The gardens provided a magnificent backdrop to support the children's learning and were a fabulous location for lunch!", says Year 5 teacher Mrs White.

Images from WednesdayBack at Dame B's, there was egg cookery, construction and recycling. Year 1 and Year 3 enjoyed a visit from Chris Hindley from the British Antarctic Survey, whose slides and stories made them feel as if they were truly there amid the ice.

Surgeon Mr MacDowell told Year 4 about how he puts bolts and pins into broken bones and the children followed the path of a fruit pastille through the digestive tract - a pair of pop socks makes a fantastic small intestine!
