"Tudors" relaxing in the sunshine1st July 2010
Decked in Tudor costume and rehearsing Tudor greetings, Year 5 journeyed back in time to 1538 to visit Kentwell Hall.
They were met at the gates by two terrifying gentlemen who questioned the children about their reason for travel (to make a report about Saffron Walden to the Lord of the Manor) and checked that the children were plague free.
Inside the manor house, the children learnt how a Tudor kitchen would have operated and the foods that would have been eaten. They discovered the cost of sugar and the role of 'sweetmeats' - the particularly gruesome ones were a hit!
More glimpses of Tudor life They observed the Lord of the Manor being instructed in the ways of dancing and had a quick maths lesson on measuring using a 'fathom stick'.
In the grounds, they visited the dairy, the baker, the brewer and the alchemist, also the farm, armoury, archery, potters, wool dyers, wool spinners and the carpenters. Only one or two of the children ended up in the stocks, but they were freed in time for their picnic lunch.
"Kentwell is a fabulous venue - it truly brings history to life for the children and gives them a genuine experience of life in 1538," said Year 5 teacher Mrs Gillman.
