Creating a "bug hotel" on a dark November afternoon

Eco-Schools

Dame Bradbury's is committed to becoming a more sustainable school, seeking to reduce our impact on the environment and educating the children about ways to protect our world.

In March 2010, we achieved a Green Flag, as part of the Government's Eco-Schools programme. This acknowledges the steps we have taken towards becoming a sustainable school, part of the Government's aim for all schools by 2020.

Our initiatives include introducing waste recycling in school, putting water hippos in cisterns, recycling clothing through the Bag2School project and Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust. We have also introduced an online communications system to reduce our use of paper. Our Eco Code is displayed throughout the School.

We have had an energy audit carried out which reveals that much of the School is fairly energy efficient but, as expected, the 19th century main building is not as good as the rest.

The School's ecological initiatives are led by Assistant Head Lucy Brown, with Gardening Teacher Liz Bicknell and members of the School's after-school Green Club, involving children from Years 3 to 6. Two Governors are involved with the initiative, one of whom is a specialist in energy assessment.

An environmental garden and dipping pond, a playground willow structure and a teaching garden are three key ecological constructions within our grounds and a wild garden area is currently being created, complete with a "bug hotel".
