Whether your child is a budding David Beckham or Laura Robson or simply enjoys running about outside, there are plenty of ways to stay fit and active at Dame B’s – whatever their age and ability.

We offer at least 16 sports, from rounders, badminton and athletics to the less traditional fencing and dance. In the winter term, the focus is on hockey for girls – with local training in a competitive league for those who want it – and rugby for boys, complete with fives and sixes fixtures for A and B teams.

In spring, it’s netball for girls, including games against other schools, and football for boys – our head of sport even runs a football academy in the summer holidays for those who just can’t get enough. And in summer children can test their skill and speed with cricket and athletics – so they could find themselves knocking a six at Saffron Walden cricket ground one week or running and jumping at Cambridge University athletics track the next.

In between, we mange to squeeze in gymnastics, basketball, cross country, swimming and squash, to name but a few – so there really is something for everyone.

There are plenty of competitions, including house matches where children learn skills that will prepare them for life as well as the sports field, such as organisation, leadership, being part of a team and how to be gracious in both victory and defeat.

Many of our children go on to compete at a higher level – tennis, rugby and swimming are just three of the areas where they have excelled. But it’s not only about winning – for us sport is a way of life, staying healthy and, above all, taking pleasure in using your body.
